Background of the Study:
Urban air pollution in Port Harcourt City has escalated as industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust, and urban sprawl contribute to deteriorating air quality. This environmental challenge significantly affects the respiratory health of residents, leading to an increase in chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and other pulmonary diseases (Ibrahim, 2023). The complex interplay of urban industrial activities and inadequate regulatory oversight exacerbates air pollution, making it a critical public health issue (Okoro, 2024). This study investigates the correlation between urban air pollution and respiratory health outcomes, drawing on epidemiological data and community health surveys. It examines the chemical composition of urban air pollutants and their direct effects on lung function. The research emphasizes the urgent need for policy interventions that address emission controls and promote sustainable urban practices. By integrating data from environmental monitoring and health records, the study aims to provide a robust analysis of how urban air pollution compromises respiratory health and to suggest evidence-based solutions for mitigating its impact (Uche, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Port Harcourt City faces severe air quality issues that directly affect the respiratory health of its residents. High levels of pollutants from industrial and vehicular sources have been linked to an increase in respiratory illnesses (Ibrahim, 2023). The inadequacy of current emission control measures further exacerbates the problem, demanding a systematic investigation into the relationship between urban air pollution and respiratory health (Okoro, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of air pollution on respiratory health.
  • To propose intervention strategies to reduce air pollution and improve public health.

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Urban air pollution is significantly associated with increased respiratory illnesses.
  • H₂: Industrial emissions are the major contributors to poor air quality in Port Harcourt City.
  • H₃: Effective emission control measures improve respiratory health outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
This study is critical for public health policy as it links urban air pollution to adverse respiratory outcomes. Its findings will support initiatives aimed at reducing emissions and improving urban air quality for better health standards (Uche, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the effect of urban air pollution on respiratory health in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Rivers State, focusing solely on health impacts related to air quality within this urban setting.
